Government permits sale of alcohol in inhabited islands

Today the government has lifted long and historical ban on the sale of alcohols in inhabited islands and allowed alcohol sale in the newly opened Holiday Inn in the capital Male. Although banned in inhabited islands, alcohol is freely available in all tourist resorts (each resort being a separate island).

Consumption of alcohol and pork in this 100% Muslim country is regarded as a criminal offence while sale or import of alcohol, pork, idols for religious worship, without government permit also caries sever penalties.
